India vs New Zealand Reserve Day: All you need to know

What is a reserve day?

Unlike league matches where the matches were abandoned and points were shared, the International Cricket Council has kept a reserve day for the semi-finals and the final. The reserve day is an extra day included by the ICC in the world cup schedule for the knockout stage- semi-final and final. The reserve day is kept so that in case the match is unable to take place on the scheduled day then it can be played on the reserve day. The reserve day is included in the world cup schedule to give a fair chance to the teams playing in the semi-finals.

When are the Reserve Days?

Reserve day for India vs New Zealand Semi final 1 at Old Trafford:
Wednesday 10th July (10.30am BST)

Why are there no reserve days for World Cup group stage matches?

The ICC faced a lot of criticism for not keeping reserve days for group stage matches, especially after the rain washed away four group stage matches. However, keeping reserve days for the group stage is not practically feasible given the long duration of the tournament.

In what conditions does the match go on to the reserve day?

If a minimum of 20 overs can be played by both the teams then the match will happen on the original day. However, if match officials decide that the conditions would not allow even 20 overs then, the match will go on to the reserve day. There is also an option of extending the match by 120 minutes but if even then, there is no result then matc will be continued on the reserve day from where it was left off.

What happens if weather impacts reserve day for semi-finals and the final?

Semi finals- If reserve day for semi-finals fails to deliver a result due to poor weather conditions then the higher placed team will progress to the World Cup final.

Final- If weather obstructs play on both the originally scheduled day and reserve day for World Cup finals then, the World Cup will be shared by the two finalist teams.

How will reserve day impact ticket holders?

The tickets of the original match day will be valid for both the original match day as well as the reserve day if required. The ticket holders will need to show their tickets while entering the ground on the reserve day as well.
