The Indian government on 2 May 2011 appointed Girish Chandra Chaturvedi as petroleum secretary and shifted incumbent S Sundareshan to the ministry of heavy industries. Chaturvedi who is 1977 batch IAS officer from the Uttar Pradesh cadre is currently the Special Secretary Financial Services in the Ministry of Finance. Chaturvedi is also presently serving as a special director general in the Commonwealth Games’ organising committee.
S Sundareshan will succeed BL Meenawho will retire from the post of secretary of Heavy Industries on 30 April 2011. Sundareshan is a Kerala cadre IAS officer of 1976 batch. He had joined the ministry as additional secretary in April 2007 and was promoted to the secretary's post in February 2010.
The changes were introduced at a time when the ministry has several important decisions pending such as the multi-billion dollar stake sale by Cairn Energy in its Indian subsidiary to Vedanta Resources, falling gas output from Reliance Industries' Andhra offshore field and losses of state-run oilmarketing companies.
