J. Jayalalitha, the AIDMK (All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagham) chief was sworn-in as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu on 16 May 2011. The governor of Tamil Nadu Surjit Singh Barnala administered oath of secrecy to Jayalalithaa at the Madras University’s centenary auditorium.


Jayalaitha was an actor by profession before she entered politics. She became the chief minister of Tamilnadu for the first time from 24-06-1991 to 12-05-1996 and the second time from 2001 to 2006. She was the first woman leader of the opposition in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly. Dr. MG Ramchandran , the former chief minister of Tamil Nadu, is credited for her entry in politics.
