The decision on who will become the next Chief Minister of Maharashtra remains uncertain, even two days after the Mahayuti alliance achieved a historic win in the assembly elections. The alliance secured a total of 235 out of 288 seats, making them the winning alliance in the state.
Since the results were announced on November 23, alliance partners are under pressure to decide between the current Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and BJP leader Devendra Fadnavis for the top position.
Who will Become Maharastra’s Next CM?
According to media sources, a meeting was held in Mumbai on November 24th. The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) participated in the meeting. The NCP won 41 seats in the Maharashtra assembly elections. During the meeting, the NCP endorsed Devendra Fadnavis for the position of Chief Minister. This decision came days after the Mahayuti alliance won the 288-member assembly.
The Eknath Shinde Shiv Sena group, however, has called for Shinde to take back his position, stating that the Mahayuti was favored by the poll trends due to his main project, the Mukhyamantri Majhi Ladki Bahin Yojana.
Party-wise Cabinet Distribution
The plan for the new government in Maharashtra is reportedly finalized. The distribution of ministerial positions is expected to be as follows:
- BJP: Around 24 ministers
- Shiv Sena (Eknath Shinde faction): Around 12 ministers
- NCP: Around 10 ministers
The government will also retain the structure of one Chief Minister and two Deputy Chief Ministers.
Party | Number of Ministers |
BJP | 24 |
Shiv Sena (Shinde faction) | 12 |
NCP | 10 |
What will Happen Now?
Union Home Minister Amit Shah is expected to meet with Devendra Fadnavis, Ajit Pawar, and Eknath Shinde to discuss the next steps. Some parties, however, stated that the leaders would not be visiting Delhi.
The BJP-Shiv Sena (undivided) secured the majority in the 2019 assembly election. The Shiv Sena's withdrawal from the alliance caused political unrest in the state, therefore it didn't survive long. Over the past five years, the state has had three different chief ministers: Devendra Fadnavis of the BJP, Uddhav Thackeray of the Shiv Sena (UBT), and Eknath Shinde of the Shiv Sena (SHS).
