The nation-wide mobile number portability (MNP) was introduced on 25 November 2010. The service was first launched in the state of Haryana. According to the mobile number portability system, customers can migrate or switch over from their current service provider to other by sending an SMS. The switchover will happen after seven days from the date of application by the customers except in Jammu & Kashmir, Assam and North East licensed service areas, wherein it would be 15 working days. After the customer applies for the service, he would continue to have the old number for seven days. On the midnight of the day seventh day the phone will stop operating for two hours following which the mobile number will be transferred to the new operator. The service will be available to both pre-paid and post-paid subscribers who will have to clear all pending bills with the present operator before migrating to another.
