The New Delhi Railway Station received the National Tourism Award for the Best Tourist-Friendly Railway Station in India on 30 March 2011. The award was given for the station’s development in the areas of passenger amenities and efficiency of operations. Northern Railway’s division railway manager Ashwani Lohani received the award from Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar and actress Priyanka Chopra.
On 30 March itself, New Delhi station launched battery-operated vehicles to ferry senior citizens and the disabled.
The railway station has developed to great extent the passenger amenities and related infrastructure in the recent past. Eliminating cross movements and introduction of pre-paid taxis/autos, a large waiting hall, a third foot overbridge and rebuilding all its platforms were the major improvements.
With 16 platforms, the station registers over half a million footfalls and handles 300 trains daily.
