NIRF India Rankings 2018 released

Union Minister of Human Resource Development, Prakash Javadekar on April 3, 2018 released the NIRF India Rankings 2018 in various categories on the basis of performance of higher educational institutions.

Key Highlights

• The Indian Institute of Sciences, Bengaluru topped the list of Overall Rankings followed by IIT Madras at 2nd position, IIT Bombay at 3rd, IIT Delhi at 4th and IIT Kharagpur at fifth position.

• IISC Bangaluru also topped the University rankings, followed  by Jawaharlal Nehru University and Benares Hindu University at second and third position, respectively.

• In the Engineering Institutions category, the Indian Institutes of Technology Madras topped the list, IIT Bombay stood at second and IIT Delhi fetched third position.

• IIM Ahmedabad was declared as the top management college, followed by IIM Bangalore at second and  IIM Kolkata at third position.

• In the Colleges Category, Delhi's Miranda House fetched number one position, followed by St Stephen's College at second and Bishop Haber College of Tiruchirapalli at third.

• Among Medical Institutions, Delhi's AIIMS was ranked first, followed by PGIMER, Chandigarh at second and Vellore's Christian Medical college at third position.

Institutions and Categories

In this third edition of NIRF Rankings, a total of 2809 institutions participated in 9 categories. These institutions submitted 3954 different profiles.

Of these 2809 institution, 301 were Universities, 906 were Engineering Institutions, 487 were Management Institutions, 286 were Pharmacy Institutions, 71 Law Institutions, 101 Medical Institutions, 59 Architecture Institutions and 1087 were General Degree Colleges. These are also the categories, based on which the NIRF India Rankings 2018 ranked the institutions.

The Rankings List includes 100 institutions each in the Overall, University, Engineering and General College Categories; 50 institutions in Management and Pharmacy; 25 in Medical and 10 each in Architecture and Law.

However, 4 institutions could not fit into any category and were chosen for a special mention for excellence on a few parameters like Research.

This year also saw the beginning of limited ranking of institutions in areas like Medicine, Law and Architecture.
