Government of Assam on 2 May 2014 formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to investigate the killing of civilians in Kokrajhar and Baksa districts. The SIT would look into the conspiracy and mastermind (if any) behind the killings.
Kokrajhar, Baksa and Chirang districts of Assam’s Bodoland area faced indefinite curfew imposed on it after militants killed 20 persons and injured several others, since 1 May 2014. Following the killing, Chief Minister of the state, Tarun Gagoi announced that the government will provide 3 lakh rupees as ex-gratia for the next kin of each victim. Apart from this, the centre also pitched in with another 3 lakh rupees as ex-gratia amount.
Kokrajhar as a place is the headquarters of the ethnically volatile areas that falls under the Territorial Council (BTC). BTC is ruled by the Bodoland People's Front (BPF), which is a constituent of the Congress-led government in Assam.
