Sreeramamurthy Janaki, the renowned playback singer, refused to accept the Padma Bhushan award. She refused on the grounds that only some people from the Southern states were awarded and that honour given to her was too late. The padma awards are announced every year on the occasion of Republic Day. Apart from Janaki, the other person from Tamil Nadu who was chosen for the Padma Bhusan was industrialist Ramamurthy Thyagarajan.
