Watching certain videos can't be reason to implicate a person as terrorist: HC

• The Kerala High Court has observed that merely watching certain videos and speeches will not be a reason to implicate a person as a terrorist.
• A division bench comprising justices A M Shaffique and P Somarajan made the observation while considering an appeal filed by one Muhammed Riyas, challenging an NIA court order denying bail to him.
• In its recent verdict, the court also set aside the National Investigation Agency (NIA) court order and granted bail to him.
• In his appeal, Riyas had submitted that he was arrested on terror charges following a complaint filed by his estranged wife, a Hindu woman who had converted to Islam.

NASA to fly a helicopter on Mars

• NASA is planning to send a small helicopter to Mars, in the first test of a heavier-than-air aircraft on another planet.
• The Mars helicopter will be bundled with the US space agency’s Mars rover when it launches in 2020.
• The helicopter would be specifically designed to fly in the atmosphere of Mars, which is 100 times thinner than Earth’s.

Telangana to provide 2% quota for sportspersons in government jobs

• Giving effect to Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao's recent announcement, an order was issued on May 14, 2018 providing two per cent reservation in government jobs in Telangana to meritorious sportspersons.
• The move however, will not affect the overall percentage of reservation in the state.
• The two per cent would be horizontal reservation and not vertical reservation.
• It would be applicable to 29 recognised sports disciplines.

Paytm introduces automatic recurring payments

• Paytm has introduced automatic recurring payments, a new feature that would let users configure the payments app to pay for periodic recurring expenses automatically.
• Similar to standing instructions for bank accounts, the ‘My Payments’ feature can be used for high-value payments for a variety of cases.
• Company expects the feature to significantly boost bank-to-bank transactions on the Paytm app.

World Bank to provide a grant to Bangladesh

• The World Bank (WB) is going to provide Bangladesh with a grant to meet the basic needs of around one million Rohingyas who fled from Myanmar in August 2017.
• A World Bank team would be visiting Bangladesh to discuss the issue with the government.
• As per the bank’s conditions, the entire fund that the WB has finally agreed to provide Bangladesh will have to be spent for the Rohingyas only.

Guatemala moves embassy to Jerusalem

• Guatemala on May 16, 2018 opened its new embassy in Jerusalem, becoming the second country to do so after the United States, which made the move two days earlier.
• The move gives Israel a diplomatic boost even as it faces international criticism for the deadly violence on the Gaza border.
• Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said it was fitting since Guatemala also followed the US to be the second country to recognize Israel 70 years ago.
• President Donald Trump announced his decision in December 2017 to recognize Jerusalem as Israel's capital and move the American embassy there, triggering criticism from countries across the world including some of US’s closest allies.

 

EU countries agree Iran deal 'not perfect': Merkel

• German Chancellor Angela Merkel said on May 17, 2018 that EU countries agreed that the Iran nuclear deal was ‘not perfect’ but insisted it should be preserved, after the US withdrawal threw the accord into doubt.
• The EU leaders meeting in Sofia have backed a ‘united’ approach to keeping the deal alive after US President Donald Trump pulled out and re-imposed sanctions.
• Merkel stated that everyone in the European Union shares the view that the agreement is not perfect, but that they should remain in this agreement and conduct further negotiations with Iran on the basis of other issues such as the ballistic missile programme.
• French President Emmanuel Macron said that the bloc was working to keep the existing agreement alive so that their businesses can remain in Iran.
• Macron added by saying that the 2015 agreement needs to be completed by a nuclear agreement beyond 2025, an agreement on ballistic activities and Iran's regional presence.

Amitabh Bachchan most engaging Indian actor on Facebook

• Superstar Amitabh Bachchan has been voted the most engaging Indian actor on Facebook in a new survey.
• According to Score Trends, the 75-year-old actor has over 30 million followers on the popular social networking site.
• The survey ranked Bachchan at number one position with 100 points on Facebook, closely followed by Salman Khan with 95 points and Shah Rukh Khan with 68 points.
• The ‘Padmaavat’ actor Ranveer Singh was ranked fourth with 52 points and Akshay Kumar was ranked fifth with 49 points.

Delhi to become the most populous city: UN estimates

• According to the United Nations estimates, Delhi is projected to become the most populous city in the world around 2028.
• Tokyo is the world’s largest city with population of 37 million inhabitants, followed by New Delhi with 29 million and Shanghai with 26 million.
• The projected population size of New Delhi in 2028 is about 37.2 million.

Guwahati: India’s first solar powered railway station

• Guwahati now has India’s first railway station run by solar power.
• Around 2352 solar modules with a capacity of generating 700 kwp has been set up over the roof of the Guwahati railway station.
• The solar power plant will save Rs 67 lakh worth of electricity.
