Cyclonic Storm ‘Fani’ reached Odisha Coast between Gopalpur and Chandbali around Puri on May 03, 2019 with maximum sustained wind speed of 170-180 kmph gusting to 200 kmph. The cyclone Fani is being tracked by Doppler Weather Radars Vishakhapatnam and Machilipatnam.

The name of the Cyclone 'Fani', pronounced as 'Foni' was suggested by Bangladesh. It means 'Snake' or 'hood of snake'. The name ‘Fani’ was decided from a list containing 64 names.

Former ISRO Chairman awarded France's highest civilian honour

Former ISRO chairman A S Kiran Kumar was on May 2, 2019 conferred with France's highest civilian honour, Chevalier de l'Ordre national de la Legion d'Honneur, for his contribution to India-France space cooperation.

Kumar was conferred with the prestigious honour by France’s Ambassador to India Alexandre Ziegler on behalf of the French President.

India, England retain top spots in ICC rankings

The International Cricket Council (ICC) on May 2, 2019 released the updated MRF Tyres ICC Test Team and ICC ODI Team Rankings. As per the updated rankings, India and England retained their top spots in Test and ODI rankings, respectively.

In order to calculate the updated Rankings, the ICC removed series results from 2015-16 series and weighted the outcomes from 2016-17 and 2017-18 at 50 percent. The rankings were released just days before the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019, which is scheduled to begin in England and Wales from May 30, 2019.

SC: Relative of victim can file dowry harassment complaint

The Supreme Court of India in a landmark judgement on April 30, 2019, ruled that any relative of a woman, who is undergoing cruelty and dowry harassment by her husband or in laws, can file a complaint against them.

The judgement was delivered by a bench comprising SC Justices Ashok Bhushan and Justice KM Joseph. The bench stated that Section 498A of the Indian Penal Code, which deals with matrimonial cruelty against women, does not contemplate that complaint should be filed only by women, who is subjected to cruelty by husband or his relative.

99942 APOPHIS asteroid to cruise by Earth in 2029


An asteroid named 99942 APOPHIS is on course to pass close to Earth on April 13, 2029. This massive asteroid will be visible to the naked eyes when it passes close to Earth. It is a near-Earth asteroid, which will cruise by Earth in 2029, about 31,000 km above the surface.

99942 Apophis is 340 m (about 1100 ft) wide. According to NASA it is rare for an asteroid of this size to pass Earth so closely. This is one of about 2,000 currently known asteroids roaming in the galaxy. Scientists believed that their observations can help to gain important scientific knowledge to protect our planet in future.
