1. (b) Iran
The Iranian government has announced that it has lifted all restrictions on the use of the Internet, including the Telegram message app. Protests had spread across Iran after residents of the northeastern city of Mashhad took to the streets on 28 December over unemployment and rising prices. The protesters used Telegram and other social networking services. The unrest subsided after the government imposed the controls.

Senior Rashtriya Janata Dal leader and former Union Minister Raghunath Jha passed away late on 14 January 2018 at Delhi’s Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital. He was suffering from kidney ailment. Jha was the Union minister of State for Heavy Industries and Public Enterprise in the UPA government led by former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena has ordered to re-impose ban on women buying alcohol or working in places that sell or manufacture liquor, few days after it was lifted by his government. The recent removal of a 39-year ban for women had attracted wide media attention and was welcomed by woman and intellectual groups.
4. (c) Maharashtra
The Bombay High Court has directed the Maharashtra government to file a report on steps taken by it to improve the condition of children's homes in the state. The decision was taken by a division bench comprising Justices A S Oka and P N Deshmukh. The court was hearing a suo-motu PIL on the poor condition of children's homes and the homes for children with special needs in the state, established under the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act.
5. (b) Israel
India signed 9 Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) with Israel on 15 January 2018, during the visit of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to India. Netanyahu is the first Israeli Prime Minister to visit India in the span of the last 15 years and the second one overall. The only other Israeli Prime Minister to visit India was Ariel Sharon in 2003.

The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDA) on 15 January 2018 introduced face authentication as an additional means of Aadhaar authentication along with fingerprint and iris scan. The move will enable easy authentication for those individuals who face difficulties in other biometric authentication such as fingerprint and iris scan.

India and Sri Lanka have signed four agreements for collaboration in ICT sector, setting up of e-office system and connecting of National Knowledge network (NKN) for collaboration among universities and academics. The MoU for cooperation was signed by Union minister for Information Technology Ravi Shankar Prasad with his Sri Lankan counterpart in Colombo.
