Toyota and Honda launched hydrogen fuel-cell cars at Los Angeles Auto Show

Toyota and Honda in the third week of November 2014 launched hydrogen fuel-cell cars at the Los Angeles Auto Show.

Toyota unveiled its a Toyota Mirai (the name means future) whereas Honda unveiled its latest FCV Concept.

The sale of Toyota Mirai is expected to happen in Japan by the end of year 2014 and in the US and Europe (including the UK) in 2015. On the other hand, FCV Concept of Honda is expected to go on sale in 2016.

Specifications of Toyota Mirai

  • The Mirai is based on technology used in Toyota's hybrid cars. It takes the power controls, the electric motor, and the main nickel-metal hydride battery from the Camry hybrid whereas the chassis mainly taken from the Lexus HS 250h.
  • It comes with twin 60-litre hydrogen tanks which are place under the rear seat whereas the fuel cell and power electronics are mounted under the floor.
  • The 153bhp Mirai has a range of 300 miles. It will accelerate from 0-60mph in 9.0 sec and can be re-fuelled in under five minutes.
  • It will be priced at around 63000 pounds, including 20 per cent VAT and before Government grants. That means it costs about three times as much as a conventional family saloon.
  • It is capable of power take off functions which can be used to provide household electricity for up to a week.

Specifications of Honda FCV Concept

  • The FCV Concept builds on Honda's experience with the FCX Clarity fuel-cell vehicle since 2008.
  • It is claimed to be more efficient and capable of being packaged in a conventional car body with all the major parts of the fuel cell installed under the bonnet rather than between the seats as they were with the FCX Clarity.
  • It has a newly designed fuel-cell stack, which has exactly the same 3.1kW/litre power density as the Toyota’s and is 33 per cent smaller than that in the outgoing model.
  • It is claimed to produce more than 135bhp and is fuelled by gaseous hydrogen stored in a single tank at 10000psi which gives the car a 435-mile range.
  • It is capable of power take off functions which can be used to provide household electricity for up to a week.
