UP Police has banned offering namaz across the roads of UP, as per recent media reports. The decision comes after limited bans were imposed on offering Friday namaz on roads in certain parts of the state.

DGP OP Singh confirmed the ban stating that the ban on offering namaz on the roads was issued to ensure that no namaz was offered by blocking roads. OP Singh stated on August 13, 2019 that the direction issuing the ban had been sent to all districts police chiefs and other authorities.

Singh stated that while offering namaz on roads during special occasions or festivals may be allowed by the district administration owing to the large crowd, the practice will not be allowed during every Friday prayer.

Similar bans were initially imposed by the UP police in several districts of Aligarh and Meerut. The direction banned offering namaz on the roads outside mosques and also during Friday prayers.

Why has UP Police banned namaz on roads?

The UP police have banned namaz on roads mainly because it causes disruption in road traffic and interrupts smooth traffic flow.

Other religious communities would also not be allowed to hold similar large gatherings on the roads if it disrupts traffic or causes inconvenience to others.
