Indian Railways on 4 October 2012 introduced a brand new website and SMS service to provide real-time details of running trains. To avail the facilities of the website one can log in to www.trainenquiry.com or send an sms via phone by typing SPOT <Space><Train Number> and sending it to 139. The facility in form of website and sms service is created for providing the passengers information related to the running time and location of different trains.

The railways have obtained permission from ISRO in relation to the project and its operation thorough satellite and allocated a sum of Rs 121 crore in making of this project.

The website has replaced the previous one named www.simran.in from where the details of running trains’ location were made available and the mobile number used before for sms generation was 9415139139.  The service of the SIMRAN (satellite imaging for rail navigation) was closed because it was confined to 36 pairs of selected train.
