"The observance of 'Samvidhaan Hatya Diwas' will help keep the eternal flame of individual freedom and the defense of our democracy alive in every Indian."

The BJP-led Central government announced on Friday that June 25 will be observed as Samvidhaan Hatya Diwas to commemorate the imposition of the Emergency.

On June 25, 1975, the Indira Gandhi-led Congress government imposed the Emergency, suspending most civil rights for over two years.

Samvidhan Hatya Diwas: June 25

"A proclamation of Emergency was made on 25th June 1975, following which there was a gross abuse of power by the Government of the day and the people of India were subjected to excesses and atrocities," read the government's notification, shared by Home Minister Amit Shah.

"Therefore, the government of India declares 25th June as 'Samvidhaan Hatya Diwas' to pay tribute to all those who suffered and fought against the gross abuse of power during the period of Emergency and to recommit the people of India to not support in any manner such gross abuse of power in the future," it added.

PM Modi’s Reaction on Samvidhan Hatya Diwas

PM Narendra Modi posted on X, saying that June 25th will be a reminder of when the Constitution was violated.

"To observe 25th June as #SamvidhaanHatyaDiwas will serve as a reminder of what happens when the Constitution of India was trampled over. It is also a day to pay homage to each and every person who suffered due to the excesses of the Emergency, a Congress unleashed dark phase of Indian history," the PM wrote.

What is the Aim behind this Decision?

Home Minister Amit Shah stated that Prime Minister Narendra Modi's decision aims to honor the spirit of millions "who struggled to revive democracy despite facing inexplicable persecution at the hands of an oppressive government."

"The observance of 'Samvidhaan Hatya Diwas' will help keep the eternal flame of individual freedom and the defense of our democracy alive in every Indian, thus preventing dictatorial forces like the Congress from repeating those horrors," he wrote on X (formerly Twitter).

The minister also accused former PM Indira Gandhi of displaying a dictatorial mindset. "On June 25, 1975, the then PM Indira Gandhi, in a brazen display of a dictatorial mindset, strangled the soul of our democracy by imposing the Emergency on the nation. Lakhs of people were thrown behind bars for no fault of their own, and the voice of the media was silenced," he added.

Why was Emergency Imposed?

The 21-month-long Emergency in India aimed to control "internal disturbance." This decision led to the suspension of constitutional rights and the withdrawal of the freedom of speech of normal citizens as well as the press. The justification for this extreme decision was based on three reasons:

  • Threat to Security and Democracy: Indira Gandhi claimed that India's security and democracy were in danger due to the movement led by Jayaprakash Narayan.
  • Economic Development: Mrs. Gandhi believed there was a need for rapid economic development and the upliftment of the underprivileged.
  • Foreign Intervention: She also warned about the potential foreign intervention in the nation that can weaken the internal security of the country.
