In a move signifying the deepening strategic partnership and cultural camaraderie between India and France, President Emmanuel Macron has been invited as the chief guest for India's 75th Republic Day celebrations on January 26, 2024, news agency PTI reported.
Initially, the Indian government had extended an invitation to the US President Joe Biden as the chief guest however he conveyed his unavailability in January.

This development came after PM Modi visited France in July where he attended the Bastille Day (French National Day) celebrations in Parish as a guest of honour. While Macron visited Delhi for the G20 Summit. Post this, PM Modi shared on X (formerly Twitter) that he had a “productive lunch meeting” with Macron.
President Emmanuel Macron as chief guest at the Republic Day marks the sixth time a French leader will grace the Republic Day parade, highlighting the enduring ties between the two nations. Previously, Former French Prime Minister Jacques Chirac graced the event twice in 1976 and 1998. Former presidents Valéry Giscard d'Estaing, Nicolas Sarkozy and François Hollande, attended the celebrations in 1980, 2008, and 2016, respectively.
