What is the History of Slovenia National Day?

The journey to Slovenian independence started with a call for separation in 1987. An article was published in Nova Revija magazine by intellectuals that sparked a democratic movement. Further the Committee for the Defence of Human Rights became a major factor in fostering Slovenian nationalism.

A major turning point came in December 1990, when a referendum on independence was held. With a resounding 94.8% of votes in favour, Slovenians overwhelmingly expressed their desire for sovereignty.

The official declaration of independence, however, is a bit more shaded. Although the formal document was signed on June 26, 1991, Slovenia considers June 25th to be its National Day. This is because the key legislation that paved the way for independence was passed on June 25th, marking the actual day Slovenia became an independent nation.

Google Doodle mentions, “The earliest roots of Slovenian independence can be traced back to a 1987 article in the Nova revija magazine, where several scholars demanded independence from Yugoslavia. Soon after, the Committee for the Defence of Human Rights organized a sweeping democratic movement that bolstered the nationalism of Slovenians across the land. In December 1990, an independence referendum was held and saw 94.8% of the votes in favor of sovereignty.”
