The scorching heat is getting unbearable, and with that, the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has come up with the Revised Dietary Guidelines in cooperation with the National Institute of Nutrition (NIN). The guidelines present many ways to encourage good health through food in India.
However, what the country would be shocked to know that the ICMR has advised the country to avoid consuming sugarcane juice. Yes, sugarcane juice is a beverage that the country loves to consume, but it could be risky to consume.
ICMR has suggested that sugarcane juice comprises 13 to 15 grams of sugar in every 100 milliliters. The sugarcane juice contains high sugar levels. Therefore, the ICMR has suggested that the consumption of sugar should be minimized.
The sugar intake in an adult should not be more than 30 grams. For kids between the ages of 7 to 10, the sugar intake should not be more than 24 grams. Therefore, the ICMR has suggested to limit the intake of sugarcane juice.
Other drinks to avoid
ICMR has recommended the country not to consume sugarcane juice. However, there are many other drinks that the ICMR has suggested to avoid.
The regulatory has also recommended the country abstain from consuming sugary soft drinks in the summer. Moreover, the regulations also frown upon the consumption of coffee, tea, and other caffeinated drinks.
The ICMR has also suggested that one should not be consuming packaged fruit juices, energy drinks, and drinks containing alcohol.
What all drinks are good to consume in this hot summer?
While the ICMR has suggested that some drinks should be strictly avoided, it has also suggested a few drinks that could be consumed.
Coconut water can prove to be a good alternative to all the packaged sugary drinks. It is a fantastic natural hydrator.
The next good alternative that is great to consume is buttermilk. This drink comprises probiotics that help in great digestion and maintain a healthy gut. The drink is rich in minerals and vitamins too.
Lemon water too is a refreshing option to beat the heat. The beverage is rich in vitamin C. This vitamin boosts the immune system. The drink helps the body detoxify and maintains the electrolyte balance.
Fruit juices also prove to be beneficial to manage the scorching summers. Whole fruit juices are rich in minerals and are excellent for hydration. However, it should be noted that these fruit juices are good only when there is no added sugar added to them.
Finally, the best drink that can beat the heat is water. Nothing quenches the thirst better than water. Hot summers require clean drinking water in high amounts to hydrate the body.
