NEW DELHI: With the start of the first-ever trials of hydrogen-powered heavy-duty trucks, India has made significant progress toward its net-zero emissions target for 2070.

According to the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, union ministers Nitin Gadkari and Pralhad Joshi officially inaugurated the Tata Motors trials in New Delhi on Tuesday.

Hydrogen: The Fuel of the Future

Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari, who spoke at the event, referred to hydrogen as the "fuel of the future" and said it had the ability to completely transform India's transportation industry by reducing emissions and increasing energy independence.

"This project will move heavy-duty transportation closer to a low-carbon future and hasten the transition to sustainable mobility." He praised Tata Motors for leading this important move towards intelligent and environmentally friendly transportation.

Pralhad Joshi, the Union Minister of New and Renewable Energy, emphasized the importance of hydrogen in India's shift to a carbon-free economy. "This trial's start marks a significant turning point in demonstrating green hydrogen's capacity to decarbonize India's transportation industry.

Hydrogen’s Role in India’s Green Transition

This program, which is a component of the National Green Hydrogen Mission, demonstrates our dedication to global climate goals, energy independence, and innovation. Joshi praised Tata Motors for spearheading this initiative.

This experiment is a significant step toward long-haul, sustainable cargo transportation that supports India's larger green energy goals. Under the National Green Hydrogen Mission, the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy is funding the project, and Tata Motors won the tender. While building the infrastructure required for their broad usage, the project seeks to assess the viability of hydrogen-powered trucks in the real world.
