Prime Minister Narendra Modi dedicated 103 revamped railway stations located in 86 districts of 18 states and union territories under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme (ABSS) on May 22, 2025. This is a major milestone in the Indian Railways' drive for modernization with the goal of turning more than 1,300 stations across the country into new-age, customer-friendly transport hubs.
Important Features of Amrit Bharat Station Scheme
- Objective: The purpose of this scheme is to re-develop world-class railway stations with improved accessibility and local architectural integration.
- First Batch: 103 stations were opened, built at a cost of over ₹1,100 crore.
- Upgraded waiting areas, improved lighting, modern ticketing, Divyangjan-friendly, energy-efficient, and integrating local culture and heritage.
Stations serve 86 districts over 18 states and UTs, major and minor, of Andhra Pradesh, Assam, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Puducherry, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Uttar Pradesh, and West Bengal.

Major Highlights of the Inauguration Event
- Virtual inauguration by PM Modi from Rajasthan's Bikaner.
- The newly redeveloped Deshnoke Station in Rajasthan, with local architectural motifs, was a standout at the event.
- Other Projects: PM Modi also inaugurated the new Bikaner-Mumbai Express and laid the foundation stones for various infrastructure projects worth more than ₹26,000 crore.

Significance and Future Plans
- Cultural Integration: The architecture of each station can be seen in its design, which shows regional identity and improves the travel experience.
- Passenger Amenities: Divyangjan-friendly (handicapped) infrastructure is among the improved amenities for comfort, safety, and accessibility.
- Sustainability: A focus on eco-friendly methods and energy efficiency.
- Expansion: Approximately 500 stations are planned for redevelopment by 2027, with an additional 100 scheduled for the next eight months.
