    In the 89th Oscar Award ceremony which was organized in Los Angeles, "Moonlight" was awarded for the "Best Film Award", while "La La Land" was rewarded in six categories, including "Best Director" and "Best Actress". In this article we are giving a list of Indians or persons of Indian origin who are awarded or nominated in Oscar award ceremony.

    List of nominated/award-winner Indians at Oscar Awards

    1. Bhanu Athaiya

    Bhanu Athaiya, who worked as a costume designer in more than 100 Indian and international films, was awarded the "Best Costume Designer" award for Richard Attenborough's film "Gandhi" at the 55th Oscar Award ceremony in 1983. She was the first Indian or the first man/woman of Indian origin who had received the Oscar award.

    2. Satyajit Ray

    Famous Bengali film producer and one of the greatest film makers of the 20th century; Satyajit Ray was honoured with "Honorary Award" at the 64th Oscar Award ceremony in 1992 for his remarkable contributions to the world cinema. He is the first and only Indian to receive this honorary award.

    Renowned sound designer, sound editor and mixer of Hindi cinema, Tamil cinema, Malayalam cinema and Hollywood cinema, Rasool Pukutty along with Richard Peker and Ian Tape Was awarded in the category of "Best Sound Mixing" for the film "Slumdog Millionaire" at the 81st Oscar Award ceremony in 2009.

    A popular musician and singer A. R. Rahman, who worked in various Indian and international films, was rewarded in the "Best Original Score" and "Best Original Song" category at the 81st Oscar Award ceremony in 2009 for the film ""Slumdog Millionaire".

    Apart from this, Rahman was nominated in the "Best Original Score" and "Best Original Song" category for the film "127 Hours" at the 83rd Oscar Award ceremony in 2011.

    5. Gulzar

    Well known poet and famous Hindi songwriter Gulzar was rewarded in the "Best Original Song" category for film "Slumdog Millionaire" at the 81st Oscar Award ceremony in 2009.

    6. Mehboob Khan

    Famous producer and director of Hindi cinema Mehboob Khan was the first Indian, whose film was nominated in the Oscar Award ceremony. Mehboob Khan's film "Mother India" was nominated in the "Best Foreign Film" category of at the 30th Oscar Award ceremony in 1958.

    7. Ismail Merchant

    British producer-director of Indian origin Ismail Merchant was nominated 4 times in Oscar Awards ceremony for various films. Ismail Merchant's film "The Creation of Woman" was nominated in the "Best Short Film" category at the 33rd Oscars Award ceremony in 1961.

    After this, "A Room with a View" was nominated in the "Best Movie" category at the 59th Oscar Awards ceremony in 1987, "Howards end" in the "Best Movie" category at the 65th Oscar Awards ceremony in 1993 and "The Remains of the Day" in the "Best Movie" category at the 66th Oscar Awards ceremony in 1994.

    8. Vidhu Vinod Chopra and K.K. Kapil

    Famous Hindi film producer and director Vidhu Vinod Chopra and K.K. Kapil's film "An Encounter of Faces" was nominated in the "Best Short Documentary Film" category at the 51st Oscar Awards ceremony in 1979.
