NEW DELHI: The Modi government has announced a 24% rise in salary, allowances, and pensions for Members of Parliament (MPs) and retired MPs, effective April 1, 2023.
The Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs issued a notification on Monday revising MPs' monthly salaries from Rs 1 lakh to Rs 1.24 lakh, while also raising their daily allowances and pension benefits.
MP’s Revised Salary
According to the announcement, the daily allowance for sitting MPs has been increased from Rs 2,000 to Rs 2,500. Former MPs will now earn a pension of Rs 31,000 per month, up from the previous Rs 25,000.

Additional Pension Benefits
- The pension for former MPs has increased from Rs 25,000 to Rs 31,000 per month.
- MPs will receive an additional pension of Rs 2,500 per month for each year of service beyond five years (previously Rs 2,000).
Reason for Salary Revision
- The revision was made under the Salary, Allowances, and Pension of Members of Parliament Act.
- It is based on the Cost Inflation Index as per the Income Tax Act of 1961.
- This is the first salary revision since 2018.
Updated MP Salary and Allowances
- MPs now receive a base salary of Rs 1,00,000 per month.
- A constituency allowance of Rs 70,000 is provided for office expenses and voter interactions.
