    Prakash Karat is an Indian politician. He was born in Burma (Myanmar) on 7th February, 1948. He was the General Secretary of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) from 2005 to 2015. Karat is replaced by Sitaram Yechury as the General Secretary of the Communist Party of India in 2015.

    Prakash Karat is married to Brinda Karat (also a renowned politician ). They got married in 1975. They have no children. Prakash Karat’s father worked as a clerk in Burma Railways. Prakash Karat is Malayali of Nair caste. His family hailed from Elappully, Palakkad, Kerala.

    Career

    Prakash Karat studied in Madras Christian College in Chennai. He went to Madras Christian College as an under-graduate in Economics. He won the prize for best student in graduation.  In the year 1970, Prakash Karat got an M. Sc. degree from Edinburgh University for thesis in "Language and politics in modern India".

    Profession

    • In the year 1985, Prakash Karat's profession endured a radical change when he was elected to Central Committee of CPI (M).
    • In year 1992, Prakash Karat was made the member of 'Politburo' which is the essential managerial body of the CPI (M).
    • In year 2005, he became the General Secretary of CPI (M) which was a foremost sway for a party that had observed only veterans at its helm. At this critical moment, CPM, along with other 3 left parties was given a significant say in UPA government in New Delhi. This provided crucial support to the government.
    • Prakash Karat is also the MD of Left Word Books which is a left wing publishing house.
    • He is a part of editorial board that issues a Marxist theoretical journal.

    Achievements

    Prakash Karat won 1st prize in all India essay competition in Tokyo Olympics. He was the author of 5 best - selling books : Language, Nationality & Politics in India, A World to Win - Essays on the Communist Manifesto, Across Time & Continents: A tribute to Victor Kiernan, Subordinate Ally: The nuclear deal & India - US strategic relations & politics & policies.
