Why was Telangana State Formed?

The history of Telangana dates back before 2014. Following the Independence of India in 1947, the Telangana area was part of the princely state of Hyderabad. It was annexed by the Indian Union in 1948 by a military operation.

The States Reorganisation Act, 1956, later, merged Telangana with Andhra State to form the state of Andhra Pradesh. The goal was to bring the Telugu-speaking people together. Instead, it sowed deep regional discontent.

Residents of Telangana felt disadvantaged. They stated that the employment, investment in irrigation and educational institutions were in coastal Andhra. This feeling of neglect sowed the seeds of a long and painful statehood movement.

The Journey to Statehood

In 1969, the first formal protests for a separate state started. The Telangana Praja Samithi's Jai Telangana movement brought the issue to national attention . Political reassurances helped to defuse the situation temporarily but the demand did not go away.

The modern movement started in 2001. Then Deputy Speaker of the Andhra Pradesh Assembly K. Chandrasekhar Rao (KCR) quit the Telugu Desam Party. He founded the Telangana Rashtra Sametha (TRS) on 17th May 2001. The only agenda of the party was to establish a separate Telangana state.

The movement peaked in emotional terms in November 2009. KCR launched a hunger strike on 29th November 2009, calling for immediate statehood. The strike led to massive student demonstrations, workers' strikes and a series of suicides by young Telangana activists.

The pressure worked. The central government announced that it would formally start the procedure to create a new state. The Congress Working Committee had after years of consultations, committee reports and political negotiations passed a resolution endorsing the formation of Telangana on July 30, 2013.

Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act, 2014

After a tough legislative battle in the Indian Parliament, the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act, 2014 was passed. It is commonly referred to as the Telengana Act. The Lok Sabha passed the bill on 18th February 2014. It was passed by the Rajya Sabha on 20th February 2014. The bill was signed into law by President Pranab Mukherjee on March 1, 2014.

The State of Telangana came into existence on 2nd June 2014. At the time of its establishment, it was made up of ten districts. Hyderabad was made the capital of the state. It was also the joint capital for the residual Andhra Pradesh for up to 10 years.

KCR brought TRS to a big victory in the 2014 state elections. He was sworn in as the first Chief Minister of Telangana, where he served for around 10 years. A.Revanth Reddy took over as the second CM of Telangana on 7th December, 2023.

Telangana Formation Day is a state holiday in Telangana. Celebrations occur on all levels, ranging from large government functions to school programs and community events.

The main ceremony is held traditionally at Secunderabad Parade Grounds. The Chief Minister raises the national flag, gives a speech on the progress of the state and pays homage at the Martyrs Memorial at the Gun Park. That memorial is a tribute to those who died in the statehood movement.
