A river is a natural flowing watercourse, usually freshwater, flowing towards an ocean, sea, lake or another river. It arises generally from a mountain and starts its journey as a stream, creek, brook, rivulet, and rill. What is River basin?

The river basin is an area of land drained by a river and its tributaries. It encompasses the entire land surface dissected and drained by many streams and creeks that flow downhill into one another. Land and water are ecologically linked in a natural system of the river basin.

What is command Area?

The command area is the area around the dam/ project, where the area gets benefits from the dam, such as irrigation water, electricity, etc. It is an area which can be irrigated from a scheme and is fit for cultivation. In other words, it is the area around a dam which is under its command as an irrigation source.

1. In a river basin, all the water drains to a large river.

1. It is an area around the dam/ project from where all the water management programmes are done.

2. It is the basic hydrological unit for planning and development of water resources.

2. It helps to build the efficient farm water management practices for optimizing agricultural productivity and production and improving socio-economic condition of farmers.

3. Tributaries, watershed, confluence, source and mouth are the typical features of the river basin.

3. It is a place where farm development and water management activities such as construction of field channels (for carrying water from canal outlet up to the farms) and field, intermediate and link drains; repairing of canal systems are done.

4. It includes all the surface water from rain runoff, snowmelt, and nearby streams that run downslope towards the shared outlet, as well as the groundwater underneath the earth's surface.

4. It is an area where the rational system of water distribution is undertaken with a view to ensuring equitable and timely supply of water to the farmers.
