WhatsApp Goes Offline: Testing AirDrop-like File Sharing for a More Independent Future

For years, WhatsApp has dominated the instant messaging landscape, offering a convenient way to connect with friends and family globally. However, one limitation has persisted: the reliance on an internet connection for file sharing. This can be frustrating in areas with poor connectivity or for users with limited data plans. Recognising this pain point, WhatsApp is testing a new feature – an AirDrop-like file sharing option that doesn't require internet access.

The feature was reported by WABetaInfo and it states: “WhatsApp is exploring the possibility of introducing a feature to share files with people nearby even on the iOS app, scheduled for release in a future update of the app.”

“The implementation of this feature appears different from the one in development for the Android app, as it seems to require scanning a QR code to start sharing the file instead of using the same nearby device detection method adopted on WhatsApp for Android,” it adds.

What is the New Feature?

Codenamed "Nearby Share," this feature draws inspiration from Apple's AirDrop and Google's Nearby Share functionalities. It allows users to share photos, videos, and documents with other WhatsApp users in close proximity, eliminating the need for an internet connection. This is particularly beneficial in situations like:

  • Travelling: Sharing travel photos or documents with fellow travellers without worrying about roaming charges.
  • Rural areas: Exchanging files in locations with limited or unreliable internet access.
  • Data limitations: Preserving precious mobile data for essential tasks and using offline file sharing for casual exchanges.

WABetaInfo mentions: “Sharing files with people nearby without relying on an Internet connection significantly will enhance the file transfer experience. This method is particularly advantageous for large files such as high-resolution photos, videos, and documents, especially in areas with limited or unstable network coverage, where people might be unable to use WhatsApp.”

How Does it Work?

WABetaInfo suggest the following functionalities:

  • Device Discovery: Nearby Share might utilise Bluetooth to detect other WhatsApp users within a specific range (potentially a few metres).
  • Security Measures: End-to-end encryption, a hallmark of WhatsApp communication, is likely to be implemented for secure file transfers. Usernames or phone numbers might be hidden during the process to maintain privacy.
  • Platform Compatibility: The feature is currently being tested on the Android beta version, but it's expected to be rolled out for iOS eventually, creating a seamless cross-platform experience.
  • Transfer Initiation: There might be different approaches depending on the platform. On Android, a list of nearby devices could be displayed, allowing users to choose the recipient. For iOS, QR code scanning could be a possibility, similar to how Wi-Fi connections are shared.

Benefits of the New Feature:

The introduction of offline file sharing offers several advantages:

  • Convenience: Users can share files instantly without internet dependence.
  • Data Savings: Mobile data plans can be stretched further by prioritising online activities.
  • Accessibility: Users in remote locations or with limited data plans can benefit greatly.

The testing of this feature signifies WhatsApp's commitment to enhancing user experience. Offline file sharing can revolutionise communication, especially in regions with limited internet infrastructure.
