Employees in Telangana, Karnataka, Delhi, and Haryana have been identified as the most hard-working in India, according to a recent EAC study. Telangana leads with an average workweek of 43.26 hours. These states showcase significant economic contributions and a robust workforce dedication to productivity.

Do you know, according to a report published by the International Labour Organisation (ILO), Indians are among the most overworked workers globally while earning the lowest minimum statutory wage in the Asia-Pacific region, barring Bangladesh?

According to a study entitled ‘Time Spent on Employment-Related Activities in India: A Note,' prepared by Dr Shammika Ravi, the average Indian worker spends 422 minutes each day on paid economic activities. In other words, 42 hours per week (assuming 6 days per week).

Additionally, many states are considered to have the most hard-working workforce in India, such as Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu. Curious to know? Let's get started!

Time Spent by Individuals Per Day on Paid Activities (Work)

The average time spent on paid economic activities, or "working," in India is approximately 422 minutes per day. For a typical 6-day workweek, this equates to 42.2 hours per week. 

Notably, there are significant variations across states. Union Territories like Daman & Diu and Dadra & Nagar Haveli surpass 600 minutes of work daily, equivalent to more than 10 hours per day. 

In contrast, states like Goa and most of the Northeastern region report less than 360 minutes per day, amounting to under 6 hours. On average, individuals in Delhi dedicate 8.3 hours to work each day, compared to 5.5 hours in Goa and 5.87 hours in Assam.

If speaking of which state spends the most time across the three sectors, then Delhi has spent 515 minutes per day in the primary sector, which is equal to 60.08 hours per week. 

Additionally, Daman and Diu have spent 699 minutes per day in the secondary sector, which is equivalent to 81.55 hours per week. Again, Daman and Diu spend 615 minutes per day, which will be equal to 71.75 hours a week.

It's interesting to look at how work culture differs across states, especially between government jobs and private/public companies. 

In rural regions, Dadra & Nagar Haveli leads with 68.72 hours per week, followed by Daman & Diu at 62.09 hours per week, which is the highest for rural areas.

Other states with high working hours in rural areas include Delhi (56.21 hours per week), Uttarakhand (53 hours per week), and Chandigarh (52.85 hours per week). Additionally, Lakshadweep, Jammu & Kashmir, and Punjab also work 46.7 hours per week.

In urban regions, Daman & Diu continues to top the list with 61.6 hours of work in a week. Other states with high average working hours include Telangana (57.63 hours per week), Rajasthan (54.37 hours in a week), and Chandigarh (456 minutes/day).

The data shows how much time government employees spend on work in different states and Union Territories (UTs) across India, broken down by rural and urban areas. 

In rural areas, Dadra & Nagar Haveli have the highest work hours, with people working about 68.4 hours a week (589 minutes per day). 

Daman & Diu follows with 62.2 hours a week (532 minutes per day), while Delhi, Uttarakhand, and Chandigarh have 53.6, 47.6, and 47.3 hours a week, respectively. Other areas like Lakshadweep, Jammu & Kashmir, and Punjab also have more than 45 hours of work each week.

In urban areas, Daman & Diu again tops the list with 61.3 hours a week (528 minutes per day), followed by Telangana with 57.9 hours (494 minutes per day). Rajasthan, Chandigarh, and Tamil Nadu have 54.9, 53.6, and 52.4 hours a week, respectively. 

Other states like Dadra & Nagar Haveli, Punjab, Andhra Pradesh, and Maharashtra also show more than 50 hours of work per week.
