Ratan Naval Tata, Chairman Emeritus of Tata Sons, passed away at the age of 86 in Mumbai on Wednesday, October 9, 2024. 

He was admitted to Mumbai's Breach Candy Hospital earlier in the week for age-related checkups but was later transferred to intensive care after a sudden drop in blood pressure.

Tata's death has been met with widespread grief and heartfelt tributes from across India, including the Bollywood fraternity. 

N Chandrasekaran, Chairman of Tata Sons, expressed a profound sense of loss, acknowledging Tata's immeasurable contributions to the Tata Group and the nation. 

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also shared his condolences, recognising Tata as a visionary leader, compassionate soul, and extraordinary human being. Ratan Tata's legacy extends beyond his business achievements, as he was admired for his humility, ethics, and philanthropy. 

In a 2018 interview, Tata expressed his wish to be remembered as "a person who made a difference." His contributions have left an indelible mark on various industries, including automobiles and telecommunications, shaping the fabric of modern India.

Tata’s family requested privacy during their time of grief and said, “We, his brothers, sisters and family, take solace and comfort in the outpouring of love and respect from all who admired him. 

While he is no longer with us in person, his legacy of humility, generosity, and purpose will continue to inspire future generations.” Among the next generation of Tata heirs are Leah, Maya, and Neville Tata, the children of Noel Naval Tata, Ratan Tata’s half-brother.

Mohini Mohan Dutta is an entrepreneur in the travel sector from Jamshedpur who is set to inherit a significant portion, reportedly one-third, of Ratan Tata's assets, estimated to be over ₹500 crore. 

This unexpected inclusion in Ratan Tata's will has surprised even Tata's family and close associates. Dutta's family used to own Stallion Travel Agency, in which Tata Industries held a 20% stake. 

In 2013, Stallion was merged into the Taj Group’s travel services. Dutta also served as a director for TC Travel Services, an erstwhile affiliate of Thomas Cook.

Dutta and Ratan Tata's connection dates back 60 years to when they met at the Dealers’ Hostel in Jamshedpur. At Ratan Tata’s funeral, Dutta said that Tata had helped and supported him.
