 Natarajan Chandrasekaran, known simply as "Chandra," is one of India's most prominent business persons and is currently the Chairman of Tata Sons, the holding group company of the Tata Group. Born on June 2, 1963, in Mohanur, Tamil Nadu, he hails from a farm-based family and completed his applied sciences and computer application, which entailed a Bachelor of Engineering degree from Coimbatore Institute of Technology and further a Master of Engineering degree from the Regional Engineering College, Tiruchirappalli.

Career History

Chandrasekaran joined Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) in 1987 and served for nearly three decades until the designation of COO in 2007. Chandrasekaran then became the youngest CEO of the company at the age of 45, compared to some of the other CEOs in Tata's history, when he succeeded the company's CEO post in October 2009. Thereby, under his leadership, TCS emerged as the most valued company in India and also a significant player in the IT space of the global arena. He succeeds Cyrus Mistry as Tata Sons chairman at a time of great turmoil in the group after the latter was ousted in January 2017.

Successes with Tata Group

Through the new leadership of Chandrasekaran, Chairman, the Tata Group has concentrated its focus on digital innovation and sustainability. Digitalization initiatives like the diversification into new sectors- electronics manufacturing, and electric vehicle battery production were initiated by him. His strategic visionary drive was sufficient to encourage significant revenue growth for the group with consolidated revenues crossing $ 150 billion in 2022-23.

Awards

Chandrasekaran has been awarded several distinguished awards. In 2022, he was conferred Padma Bhushan, the highest civilian award from India. He has been inducted into the French Légion d'Honneur in 2023 for his contributions toward Indo-French economic cooperation35. He also serves on a number of global advisory boards and published a book titled Bridgital Nation where he writes on the use of technology to uplift society.

Personal Life

Chandrasekaran, who stays in Mumbai with his wife Lalitha and son Pranav is a fitness enthusiast and also an experienced marathon runner, having completed many high-profile marathons around the globe.
