The State Education Department, has put forward a proposal for considering only theory marks for student studying under the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) and Indian Certificate of Secondary Education (ICSE) for admission to Class 12. The move is not being appreciated by the parents of these students. A press conference was held on 15th June, 2019, Saturday where parents of about 500 students studying in various schools affiliated to ICSE and CBSE. The parents attending the conference said that such a move is injustice towards the students.
The proposal was put forward considering the dip in State Secondary Certificate (SSC) pass percentage, and as such, to ensure that the students have a chance at junior college, the State Education Department is suggesting to do away with the 20 marks allotted in the internal examinations conducted by the CBSE and ICSE Boards. These 20 marks allotted are inclusive of the terminal exam, two unit tests, notebook keeping, oral and practical exams, and projects. The claim by the department that the teachers give away these marks arbitrarily to the students is what the parents feel as unfair.
Under the current CBSE curriculum, 20 internal marks have been assigned for all compulsory subjects — English, Second Language, Science, Mathematics and Social Sciences. Students are given these marks by the school authorities after gauging their performance in the subjects throughout the year. On the other hand, the Council of Indian School Certificate Examination (CISCE), has the provision where students can drop the Mathematics subject in Class IX and X. Students opting out of Mathematics can instead take up an optional subject for which they have 50 internal marks. Also for the core subjects in the curriculum - Social Sciences, English, and the Second Language, students are required to attempt theory exam of 80 marks, while 20 marks are given internally by the teachers.
