
IIIT Amendment Bill 2020 Passed in Rajya Sabha: On 22nd Sept, Rajya Sabha i.e. the Upper House of Parliament has passed IIIT Amendment Bill 2020. The Bill passed today will grant status to 5 IIITs set up through Public-Private Partnership mode at Surat, Bhopal, Bhagalpur, Agartala & Raichur as Institutions of National Importance. These 5 will now join the 15 IIITs that have been accorded statutory status under IIIT(PPP) Act, 2017. Following the passage of Bill in Rajya Sabha, Union Education Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank’ took to twitter to share the news and also thanked PM Modi for his support and leadership in helping pass the IIIT Amendment Bill 2020.
5 IIITs Get Power to Grant Degrees
Following the passage of the Bill in the Upper House of the Parliament, the IIIT Amendment Bill 2020 will receive ascent from President Kovind to become an Act. After this, the 5 new IIITs that were earlier registered as Societies under the Societies Registration Act, 1860; will be granted statutory status as Institutions of National Importance. This will eventually empower them to grant degrees — Bachelor of Technology (BTech), Master of Technology (MTech), Ph.D degree.
Enhance Research Scenario in Country
While presenting the IIIT Amendment Bill 2020 in the Rajya Sabha, Union Education Minister said that the bill is aimed at strengthening higher education and research scenario in the country. Addressing Vice-Chairman of the house, Harivansh Narayan Singh, Mr Pokrhiyal said "I urge the members of the Rajya Sabha to pass this bill as it will enable the institutes to help our students improve the research scenario in the country and help us prosper.”
