IIM-A joins Food Security Consortium: Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad has joined a multi-nation consortium working on Food Security. The consortium has been entrusted the task to conduct research on the demand of food in different markets and estimate the demand by 2050. The Food Security Consortium will also look at the issue of sustainable use of land to ensure maximum food growth to support Global Food Security.
FABLE Consortium
Formally, the multi-nation Consortium is called FABLE – i.e. Food, Agriculture, Bio-diversity, Land and Energy Consortium. The Consortium includes member institutes from over 18+ countries including India, USA, EU Countries and Countries from G20 Group. The consortium will conduct detailed research and commission projects to understand the food consumption and demands for near future. The group also aims to develop integrated policies for participating countries to cater to food demand targets estimated by the consortium in a sustainable manner.
Why FABLE?
The consortium was formed around 1.5 years ago by the International Institute for Applied System Analysis, Sustainable Development Solutions Network and The Food and Land Use Coalition. The Group realised that the current land use and ownership are not viable to ensure long term Food Security for the nations. Therefore, the group was formed to find out alternative ways to support Food Security through sustainable use of land.
Consortium’s First Report Positive
Following the inducting of IIM-A as part of the consortium, the group has released its first report which has positively hinted that proper use of land in a sustainable manner is the primacy requirement for Food Security. The report has also suggested several different ways to achieve Food Security.
IIM-A invited to join Consortium
IIMA's Centre for Management in Agriculture Prof Ranjan Kumar Ghosh said that the premier B-school was invited to be part of the consortium to represent India and offer suggestions to ensure long term Food Security for citizens. India is going through a phase of high population explosion and that will lead to increase in food demand by 2050. Catering to this increased food demand will require expansion of agriculture which causes stress on the use of natural resources i.e. land, water and forests. IIM-A along with other global institutes will try and find out solution to this problem.
