The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Ropar has launched a new digital learning platform, AVNI - Grow with Nature, to help children learn about plants, crops, food and agriculture through everyday experiences. The platform combines Artificial Intelligence (AI) with hands-on activities, allowing young learners to explore and identify things they see around them.

AVNI has been developed by ANNAM.AI, the Centre of Excellence in AI for Digital Agriculture at IIT Ropar. The initiative is aimed at introducing children to agricultural knowledge at an early age, before they formally study agriculture as a subject.

How AVNI Helps Children Learn About Agriculture

The platform allows children to explore different elements of agriculture, including crops, fruits, vegetables, spices, cereals and millets. Using AI-powered identification, children can look at a plant, fruit or crop around them and learn more about it.

The idea is to make learning more connected to children’s daily lives. A plant growing in a school garden, a fruit at home or a crop seen in a nearby field can become a starting point for understanding how food is produced and where it comes from.

Instead of relying only on textbook-based learning, AVNI encourages children to observe their surroundings and learn through exploration. The platform is available through both web and mobile applications.

AVNI Offers Interactive Learning Features

AVNI includes several features designed to make agricultural learning more engaging for children. These include daily challenges, a digital Nature Book, Nature Gallery and Crop Compare. Children can use these features to record what they discover, explore different plants and compare crops.

The platform is available in Hindi and English and also provides audio content for younger children. According to IIT Ropar, AVNI has been designed as a child-focused learning platform with an emphasis on being free, ad-free and privacy-focused.

Developed By IIT Ropar’s ANNAM.AI Team

AVNI was designed and developed by Dr Mukesh Saini, Co-project Director of ANNAM.AI, IIT Ropar. The project forms part of ANNAM.AI’s wider work at the intersection of AI, agriculture and education.

ANNAM.AI works on AI-based digital public infrastructure for Indian agriculture. With AVNI, the team is extending this work into children’s education by using AI to support direct observation and exploration.

The initiative seeks to build greater awareness among children about the plants they see, the food they eat and the role agriculture plays in bringing food from farms to people’s everyday lives.
