Free E-Learning Platforms: To fight against the COVID-19 outbreak, the University Grant Commission (UGC) said students and teachers to take preventive measures and encouraged them to use this time productively by joining online learning. Many online education websites are offering their content for free. Also, the Government of India has developed many free e-Learning platforms for learners across various branches. Free e-Learning platforms strive to keep the learning and the teaching system uninterrupted and ongoing. Not one but many free e-Learning platforms have been developed and launched by the Government of India in due course.
There are various ICT initiatives of the MHRD, UGC and its Inter-University Centres (IUCs) - Information and Library Network (INFLIBNET) and Consortium for Educational Communication (CEC), in the form of digital platforms. These digital platforms can be used by teachers, students, and researchers in Universities and Colleges for learning. Check here are the HRD Ministry initiatives that one can use for free.
List of Free E-Learning Platforms Developed by Govt for Students
- Swayam - This E-learning platform gives access to teaching-learning resources. The purpose of SWAYAM is to present a learning platform to all. It hosts almost all the courses taught in classrooms from class 9 till post-graduation. The official website is - swayam.gov.in.
- Swayam Prabha - It is a group of 32 DTH channels providing high-quality educational curriculum-based course contents. The content covers diverse disciplines such as arts, science, commerce, performing arts, social sciences and humanities subjects, engineering, technology, law, medicine, agriculture, etc to all teachers, students and citizens across the country interested in lifelong learning. The website is swayamprabha.gov.in.
- NPTEL - The National Programme on Technology Enhanced Learning was started by IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi, IIT Kanpur, IIT Kharagpur, IIT Madras, IIT Guwahati, IIT Roorkee along with Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore in 2003. NPTEL platform - nptel.ac.in gives open online courses around engineering and core science subjects.
- e-ShodhSindhu - It provides current as well as archival access to more than 15,000 core and peer-reviewed journals. Apart from that, it provides several bibliographic, citation and factual databases in different disciplines from a large number of publishers and aggregators to its member institutions. e-ShodhSindhu can be accessed at ess.inflibnet.ac.in.
- Vidwan - Vidwan is a database of experts which provides information about experts to peers, prospective collaborators, funding agencies policymakers and research scholar in the country. Faculty members can register on the Vidwan portal to help expand the database of experts.
- National Digital Library - It is a digital repository of a vast amount of academic content in different formats. It provides interface support for leading Indian languages for all academic levels including researchers and life-long learners, all disciplines, all popular form of access devices and differently-abled learners.
- Diksha - This is an initiative of the National Council of Educational Research and Training, Ministry of Education, Government of India. DIKSHA can be accessed at diksha.gov.in by learners and teachers across the country. It currently supports various courses of NCERT, CBSE and SCERTs across India.
- e-PG Pathshala - It is an initiative taken by the MHRD under its National Mission on Education through ICT, which is being executed by the UGC. The platform, epgp.inflibnet.ac.in provides interactive e-content in 70 subjects across all disciplines of social sciences, arts, fine arts and humanities, natural and mathematical sciences.
- e-Content courseware in UG subjects - This provides e-content courseware in 87 Undergraduate courses with about 24,110 e-content modules is available on the CEC website at cec.nic.in.
