Maharashtra is set to establish India's first Artificial Intelligence university, says state Information Technology Minister Ashish Shelar. Maharashtra's AI university will lead in enhancing AI-driven solutions for governance and industry, and nurturing a future-ready workforce. It will work on creating an institution focused on AI education, research and innovation. "The university will promote research and development in AI and related fields. It will also focus on skill development, technological innovation and policy formulation. The aim is to make Maharashtra a centre for AI education and innovation," said IT Minister Ashish Shelar.
Maharashtra AI University task force
A task force has been formed for the planning and implementation of the project, state Information Technology Minister Ashish Shelar has said. It will include experts from academia, industry and government.
Chaired by the Information Technology department's principal secretary, Shri S.V.R.Srinivasan, the force will include directors of the IIT Mumbai, IIT Powai, IIM Mumbai, and NASSCOM, representatives from organisations like L&T, Dr Anil Kakodkar and Naren Kachru from Google India, Bhuvan Lodha from Mahindra Group, Atlas Skill University Vice-Chancellor Dr Rajan Velukarand, and officials from the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, Government of India, as well as experts from the Rajiv Gandhi Science and Technology Commission and the Data Security Council of India will also part in the task force.

The initiative falls in line with PM Modi’s vision of ‘Viksit Bharat 2047’, where the government's decision reflects its focus on making Maharashtra a hub for technology and innovation, the minister said.
This initiative aligns with the BJP's election manifesto, which had highlighted the use of technology for development, Ashish Shelar added.
"The AI university will be a centre of excellence, fostering collaboration between the industry, academia and government. This initiative will not only position Maharashtra as a global leader in AI but also contribute to India's technological advancement," Shelar said.
