PM Narendra Modi to inaugurate 107th Indian Science Congress today

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is all set to inaugurate the 107th annual Indian Science Congress today.

The 107th annual Indian Science Congress will be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi today. The five-day event organised in Bengaluru will be attended by leading scientists, two Nobel laureates Stefan Hell from Max Planck Institut Germany and Ada E Yonath, Expert in structural biology from Weizmann Institute of Science, Israel;  President of Nanyang Technological University, Subra Suresh, a material scientist from Indonesia, and renowned cardiologist CN Manjunath among other policymakers, academicians and delegates.

The event is expected to witness a gathering of around 15000 people. The event is themed ‘Science and Technology for Rural Development’. The participants of the event will highlight on the lack of communication between the industry, scientific fraternity and farmers and how the practice of the same could minimize the agrarian crisis. The organizers of the event said that the past few decades have witnessed major progresss in the area of cutting edge science and technology.

Among the inventions and innovations many were applied to enhance crop productivity, improve crop productivity along with diversifying rural livelihood profiles. However, the benefits could not be fully explored due to the gap between the farming community and the innovators. The science event is also meant to provide a platform to the farmers who introduced innovations in the field of agriculture. Rajendra Prasad, Vice-Chancellor of a University of Agricultural Sciences in Bengaluru said that many farmers of the country have become experts and innovators. The event will bring all of them together on a single platform where ideas can be exchanged and discussed, he added.

Other events in the five-day programme will include Science Congress, Science Communicators' Meet, Formal Science Congress, Women's Science Congress, Children's and Yoga Science. A forum of IIT Directors and Vice-Chancellors will also deliberate on challenges in the higher education sector in the grand event.
