The Tamil Nadu government decided to challenge the higher minimum eligibility marks set by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) for admission into engineering colleges.
The department is all ready to file an appeal before a division bench of the Madras High Court. The AICTE mandated that students with a minimum aggregate score of forty five percent would be eligible to enroll in BE/BTech courses under the Open Competition category. Also, the AICTE fixed the minimum eligibility aggregate at forty percent for students belonging to reserved categories ie, BC, MBC and SC/ST.
The Higher Education Department challenged the prior order in the High Court and sought to relax the norms to allow all Plus Two passed students to join engineering colleges, however the plea has been dismissed.
AICTE apparently went on a course correction two years ago, meaning 2010 and increased the eligibility scores to 50% for OCs and 45% for reserved category students. Later, it reduced the requirement by 5% in each category.
