SECTION A
I. Very Short Answer Type Questions.
(i)Answer all the questions.
(ii)Each question carries two marks.
1.Write the conjugate of the complex number 5i/7+i.
Answer: Conjugate 5i/7+i = 1/10 - i(7/10)
Hint: Rationalise the denominator (7+i)
2.Simplify -2i(3+i)(2+4i)(1+i) and obtain the modulus of that complex number.
Answer: Modulus = 40
Hint: Simplifying -2i(3+i)(2+4i)(1+i) gives (32+24i)
Let z = (32+24i)
Modulus of z is, |z| = √(x+y), where x is the real part and y is the imaginary part of z.
3.If 1, w, w² are the cube roots of unity, then prove that:
(2-w) (2-w2) (2-w10) (2-w11)=49.
Answer: (2-w) (2-w2) (2-w10) (2-w11)=49
Hint: Given, w=∛1
we have, w3−1=0.
∴ (w−1)(w2+w+1)=0
Or w2+w=−1 .........(i)
Simplify (2-w) (2-w2) (2-w10) (2-w11) using (i).
4.For what values of x the expression x2-5x-14 is positive?
Answer: x2−5x−14 is positive for x<−2 or x>7
5.Form polynominal equations of the lowest degree, with roots 1, -1, 3.
Answer: Required polynomial is : x3 - 3x2 - x + 3
Hint: Let the given roots be: α=1, β=-1, γ=3
For a polynomial, P(x) = ax3+bx2+cx+d
α+β+γ=-b/a .........(i)
αβ+βγ+γα=c/a ......(ii)
αβγ=-d/a .........(iii)
Solve (i), (ii) and (iii) to find a, b and c.
Then find P(x) by substituting the values of a, b and c.
6.There are 4 copies (alike) each of 3 different books. Find the number of ways of arranging these 12 books in a shelf in a single row.
Answer: Total number of ways of arranging these 12 books = 12!/(4!)2
7.If nPr=5040 and nCr=210, find n and r.
Answer: n=10 and r=4
8.Write down and simplify 6th term in (2x/3 + 3y/2)9.
Answer: 6th term in (2x/3 + 3y/2)9 = 189x4y5
9.Find the mean deviation about the median for the following data:
4, 6, 9, 3, 10, 13, 2.
Answer: Required median = 3.29
10.The mean and variance of a binomial distribution are 4 and 3 respectively.
Fix the distribution and find P(x≥1).
Answer: P(x≥1) = 1-(3/4)16
