The State Bank of India, India’s largest public sector lender, is recruiting Junior Associates for branches across the country. There are around 7200 posts across the country for clerical cadre whereas the examination will be in three phases – Prelims, Mains and the Language Proficiency Test.

There will be fierce competition for the posts and you have to give your best in order to feature in the final selection list. The most important aspect of this is to prepare properly from the best books available in the market for all the subjects in SBI Clerk.

SBI Clerk Exam Pattern

SBI Clerk examination will be divided into prelims and mains examinations. The Prelims examination will contain 100 questions of as many marks whereas the mains examination will be a 200-marks contest. The language proficiency test will be qualifying in nature. The prelims examination consists of reasoning ability, English Language and Quantitative Aptitude. You will face questions from General Awareness and computer awareness apart from these three in the mains examination.

What are the right materials for SBI Clerk Examination?

Having understood the syllabus and subjects in the SBI Clerk examination, it is clear that there are basically four sections that you need to master to crack this examination – Reasoning ability, Quantitative Aptitude, English Language, General Awareness and computer awareness.

Reasoning Ability

The reasoning ability questions will be there in both the prelims and the mains examination. In prelims examination, it will bear 35 marks whereas for mains, 60 marks will be allotted to it. The number of questions in the prelims examination will be 35 and for mains, it will be 50. The syllabus will include:

Syllogism, analogy, blood relations, coding-decoding, seating arrangements, puzzle, ranking and order, direction sense, inequality, analytical reasoning, input-output, statement-conclusion and sentence-argument etc.

  • A New Approach to Reasoning – Verbal and Non-Verbal by Arihant Publications

How to prepare SBI Clerk Exam 2018

Quantitative Aptitude

It is another section that will feature in both the prelims and the mains examination. In prelims examination, it will have 35 questions with as many marks allotted to it whereas for the mains examination, the marks allotted will be 50 for as many questions. The syllabus will include:

Data interpretation and data analysis, profit and loss, average, allegation, ratio and proportion, time and work, time and distance, time and work, pipe and cistern, inequality or quadratic equations, number series, partnership, simple and compound interest etc.

  • Quantitative Aptitude by RS Aggarwal
  • SBI Clerk chapter wise Solved Questions- Kiran Prakashan

English Language

This section will also be there in both the prelims and the mains examinations. In prelims examination, there will be 30 questions with as many marks allotted to them and in the mains examination the number of questions will be 40 with as many marks allotted to the section. The syllabus of the examination will include the following:

Reading Comprehension, error detection, fillers with one or two blanks, cloze test, idioms and phrases, paragraph jumbles, missing sentences, vocabulary questions, synonyms and antonyms, correct spelling, sentence completion etc.

General Awareness

This section will be there is the mains examination only with 50 marks allotted to it in as many questions. The section can be divided into static GK, Current affairs and banking awareness. The syllabus will include the following:

Current affairs of national and international importance for the last six months, countries and capitals, honors and awards, sports, international organizations, international monuments, world economy and Indian economy, abbreviations, financial terms, history of banking in India, important dams, stadiums, museums, airports, temples etc. in India

You will be benefitted from the following materials for this section:

  • Current affairs part can be prepared for any monthly magazine such as Banking Services Chronicle or Pratiyogita Kiran (You can use Kiran Magazine as a repository of mock tests as well from which you can practice on regular basis)
  • General Awareness can be prepared from Lucent’s GK (Please go through the relevant chapters only since all of the book are not included in SBI Clerk GA syllabus)
  • For banking awareness, Banking Awareness by Arihant Publication will be useful
  • Objective Banking & Financial Awareness- Dhankar Publication

Computer Awareness

This section will be coupled with the Reasoning Section in the SBI Clerk recruitment process but do not neglect this section since it may become a game-changer in the final result. The syllabus of this section will include:

History of computers, input and output devices, database management system, internet, computer terminology, MS Office –shortcuts, abbreviations related to computers, networking, hardware and software etc.
