Internet is an ocean of information. Internet though started years back, the most visible growth of internet has happened in the past two decades. Many of the famous websites were launched in past two decades and now people are dependent on them for their entertainment, knowledge, research, information etc.
We will talk about which ones are the most popular websites in the online industry and what has been their journey.
1. The first name which comes in mind is Google:
Google was started and became available online in the year 1998. It was started by Larry Page and Sergey Brinn. The name google was inspired from a mathematical term called “googol” which represents number 1 followed by 100 zeroes. With an estimated user base of over 1,100,000,000 and it being synonymous with search, google has seen a huge growth.
2. Let us talk about another big name You Tube:
You Tube was started on February 14, 2005 by Chad Hurley, Steve Chen, and Jawed Karim as a platform to share, watch and upload videos. Founders gave a preview of the website in May, 2005. Within a year of its launch Google took over You Tube and that itself explains its popularity. Currently it is at the second position, right after Google. It has approximately 100,000,000 unique user base.
3. Let us talk about the topmost social networking website Facebook:
Facebook was founded by Mark Zuckerberg in February 2004 along with his other friends Eduardo Saverin, Andrew McCollum, Dustin Moskovitz and Chris Hughes in Harvard University. It started off with something solely accessible to Harvard students and later was expanded. Before the final launch in 2004, the idea was to compare pictures of two individuals as “Hot or Not” and soon that got converted into a social networking website. Since then Facebook has brought many changes and improvements. It is riding high on growth and success.
Time to talk about another top site and a search engine Yahoo:
Yahoo was founded in January 1994 by Jerry Yang and David Filo. The word "yahoo" stands for "Yet Another Hierarchical Officious Oracle”. Yahoo once surpassed Google in 2013 in U.S.A. Yahoo saw a very nice growth in 1990s with many acquisitions, high sock price and good performance.
Last but not the least is a leading e –commerce website Amazon:
Amazon was founded in 1994 by Jeff Bezos and is the largest online retailer. Amazon.com started as an online bookstore, but soon entered into DVDs, VHSs, CDs, software, video games, electronics, apparel, furniture, food, toys, and jewelry. They were the ones to come up with much popular and used online book reader Kindle. Amazon has over 5 lakh estimated unique monthly visitors. There is a very interesting story behind the name. Founder wanted something which begins with letter “A” and he thought that Amazon is the biggest river of the world and he wanted the same for his company.
These journeys have been interesting and very well done. Looking at them it is evident that any start up and new idea can reach the heights if the base is strong and idea is unique.
