While IIM Bangalore declared that the CAT 2016 exam was conducted successfully in both, Slot 1 and Slot 2; not everything seems to be right with the CAT entrance exam. The CAT 2016 exam paper was leaked online on social media and the news seems to have rocked the MBA aspirants who appeared for the test on 4th December 2016.
The CAT 2016 paper leak came to notice during the Slot 2 of the MBA entrance exam which was conducted in the afternoon session. The images containing questions from CAT 2016 exam paper for slot 2 made their way on Facebook at around 3.09 PM, while the actual exam was still underway. Soon after this, the CAT 2016 question paper pictures went viral and were shared on other social media platforms including WhatsApp and Twitter.
The screenshots of the CAT 2016 exam paper had questions from DILR section. The technical glitch that curtailed the total marks to 100 was clearly visible in the pictures which confirm the authenticity of the leaked CAT 2016 paper. In addition to this, several CAT test takers later confirmed that the questions were certainly a part of slot 2 question paper of CAT 2016.
The snapshots of CAT 2016 question paper seem to have been taken from a mobile phone inside a test centre which has raised serious questions regarding secrecy of the paper. The most probable assumption in this regard is that a candidate managed to transmit the pictures of CAT 2016 paper while the exam was still going on during the slot 2. The main concern in this regard has been that the candidate might have managed to also get back the answers through the same route which would have helped them answer the questions.
Later in the day, IIM Bangalore which is conducting the CAT 2016 exam this year admitted to the leak. In the official notification that was released by the IIM B, they said that “There was one incident of malpractice that was promptly detected and has been dealt with by initiating the due procedure of law.” The B-school further added that “the incident has in no manner compromised the integrity of the test and CAT administration requests you not to pay any heed to rumours or insinuations in this regard.”
The only time before this CAT exam paper was leaked was in 2003 when the test was conducted in a pen-paper based mode. Following the CAT paper leak in 2003, the entire exam was re-conducted. If we are to go by this precedent, students have more to worry about.
The CAT 2016 paper leak has led to confusion and chaos among the test takers. Speculation has been ripe among the CAT 2016 test takers regarding re-test of CAT 2016 post the leak. MBA aspirants who have appeared for CAT 2016 are worried a lot and are seriously contemplating how the leak will affect their overall performance and selection chances. Many CAT 2016 candidates have demanded a thorough investigation into the paper leak whereas others have demanded a re-test. But so far, IIM Bangalore has only confirmed that they have initiated legal action against the malpractice while staying away from commenting upon the probability of re-test.
