Common prayer command given by Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has bothered the Municipal Schools in Urdu and Gujarati Medium. Since years the Municipal Schools of Urdu and Gujarati Medium were conducting separate prayers in the morning and afternoon assembly sessions. However, as per the recent statement by AMC, A common prayer would be conducted in the Schools.
The change instigated by AMC School Board is on trial basis from this week in Urdu medium Schools of South Zone including areas- Behrampura, Chandola, Danilimda and Jamalpur. These schools have about 3,500-4,000 Urdu medium students.
The parents of students studying in Urdu medium Schools (accompanied by huge number of Muslim students) are not satisfied with the conclusion made by AMC as they have submitted a memorandum to the AMC School Board questioning the intent behind this change. Mohammad Ayub, the President of Jamalpur based Social Edification and Welfare Association asked in his presentation submitted to the Administrative Officer L D Desai that- “ If the intention behind conducting common prayer is honest then why have they only given verbal instructions to the schools and not passed any written orders.”
On communication, Desai explained that this change is made as an effort towards social reform. He mentioned that the board has observed discrimination among students when it comes to prayer sessions. Hence, to eliminate the disparity and propagate the concept of ‘sarva dharma prarthna’ the common prayer practice has been commanded.
