The Council of Scientific & Industrial Research (CSIR) initiated a scheme of Awards for Young Scientists in CSIR system in the year 1987 with the name of CSIR Young Scientist Awards. The awards are conferred to the Young Scientists for their exceptional research work done mainly in India. Below mentioned are the fields in which these awards are given to the Young Scientists annually:
- Biological Sciences
- Chemical Sciences
- Earth, Atmosphere, Ocean and Planetary Sciences
- Engineering Sciences
- Physical Sciences (including instrumentation)
Objective
The main objective of CSIR Young Scientist Awards is to promote brilliance and recognising stupendous contributions made by the young CSIR scientists for their work done primarily in India during the previous five years prior to the year of the Award.
Important Date
- Deadline to file nomination: 31 January 2013
- Date of Award Ceremony: 26 September 2013 (on CSIR Foundation Day)
Eligibility Criteria (as on 26 September 2012)
- Scientists engaged in research work in any of the CSIR laboratories/institutes
- Age Limit: Maximum 35 years
- Nominee must be a regular scientific staff of CSIR system holding a post of Junior/Trainee Scientist or above (Previously Scientist ‘B’ or above in Group IV) and must have joined the CSIR laboratory
About Award
- Each awardee will be conferred with a citation (signed by the Director General, CSIR and the Vice-President, CSIR), a cash prize of Rs 50000 and a plaque.
- The award winners are entitled to a Special Honorarium of Rs 7500 per month till they attain the age of 45 years. This incentive shall be permissible as far as the recipient remains in the service of CSIR.
- Research grant of Rs 25 lakh over a period of five years is also provided, which amounts to be Rs 5 lakh per annum per CSIR Young Scientist Awardees.
Nominations: Directors/ Chairperson of Research Councils / Bhatnagar Awardees can propose nominations only of scientists belonging to the CSIR laboratories/ institutes with which they are associated (two nominations in each discipline).
Selection Process
Each nominee will be judged on the basis of a brief presentation (15 minutes) about his/her research work by the concerned Advisory Committee. This may be followed by 5 minutes question-answer session or discussion. The recommendations of the Advisory Committees are subject to approval by the Governing Body of CSIR.
Research Project: After the selections, each award winner will have to submit a research project signifying the contingency and equipment grant that would be required by him/her for the pursuit of research as per his/her proposed project which should be completed within five years independently. The project must be approved by the Director/ Research Council of the laboratories/ institute.
How to Apply: Nominations should be sent as per the prescribed Performa at Scientist Incharge, SSB YSA Unit, Human Resource Development (HRD) Group, CSIR Complex, Library Avenue, Pusa, New Delhi- 110 012 (original + nine copies). Besides this, a Digital photograph in JPEG format preferably, softcopy of duly filled Performa, and significant publications of the nominee on a single CD/DVD should also be sent.
