Anukathir Surya: Centre Approves IRS Officer's Gender and Name Change

Anukathir Surya: An Indian Revenue Service (IRS) officer has been allowed to formally change his name and gender in a historic decision which marks a major step towards diversity and acceptance. In all official papers, the officer—who is now known as Anukathir Surya—has been officially acknowledged as male. The Ministry of Finance issued this ground-breaking approval on July 9, 2024.

 

The Ministry of Finance carefully analysed and finally approved the 35-year-old officer's request to alter both his name and gender. From now on, the officer will be identified in all official documents as Mr. M. Anukathir Surya. With the approval of the appropriate authorities, this historic judgement was made and delivered to the Chief Commissioner (Authorised Representative) of the Customs, Excise, and Service Tax Appellate Tribunal (CESTAT) in Hyderabad, where Surya is presently posted as a Joint Commissioner. In addition, the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) major directors general and chief commissioners were also informed of the order.

Anukathir Surya, an IRS officer from the 2013 batch, has had an impressive career within the Income Tax and Customs departments. He began his professional journey as an assistant commissioner in the office of the Principal Commissioner of Central Excise, Chennai Commissionerate. He was promoted to Deputy Commissioner in 2018 after demonstrating remarkable competence and devotion.
