How to Become an IAS Officer?

Becoming an IAS officer is a dream of many candidates and requires determination, perseverance, hard work, smart work and effective time management. The new recruit will be initially appointed as sub divisional magistrate, who will further get promoted to district collector, divisional commissioner, and even chief secretary of a state. The candidates who applied for the posts will be tested in three phases, i.e., preliminary, main, and Interview

Prelims Examination

The prelims consist of two papers: General Studies (GS) and the Civil Services Aptitude Test (CSAT). The GS paper covers topics like history, geography, polity, economy, environment, and current affairs, while the CSAT tests logical reasoning, analytical ability, and comprehension skills. The preliminary examination is qualifying in nature. To crack this exam, candidates should focus on understanding concepts rather than learning and going deep in any subject. Regularly revise the concepts, attempt mock tests, analyse your performance, identify weak areas and work on them.

Mains Examination

The candidates who clear the prelims examination will be called for main examination. The UPSC main paper will be descriptive in nature and the main exam includes nine papers such as essays, general studies (four papers), optional subjects (two papers), and two qualifying papers (language and English). To clear the main examination, candidates should write the structured answers within the prescribed word limit. They should use heading subheadings, bullet points and bullet points wherever possible. IAS Officer Eligibility Criteria

Minimum Qualification: To become an IAS officer, you must have a bachelor's degree from a recognised university. There is no specific stream or subject requirement, graduates from any background are eligible to apply.

Age Limit: Candidates must be at least 21 years old, not more than 32 years old. There are age relaxations for candidates from certain categories, such as OBC, SC, ST, and differently-abled individuals.

Number of attempts:

General category candidates can attempt the exam six times, OBC candidates nine times, and there is no limit for SC/ST candidates, subject to an age limit.
