As a CAT aspirant, you must be aware fo the fact that this section carries 30 questions each and 60 minutes are alloted to crack the questions. If your choice of the answer goes wrong, then you will get nagetive marking in the exam.

Regardless to say that the questions carry options, but choosing the correct options is the key to score high percentile. Infact, CAT aspirants are required to clear sectional cut-off in order to qualify for admission in the premium B-schools of India. Each IIM has their distinct criteria to shorlist the candidates basis their sectional cut-off. Hence, you need to master each anf every section of the CAT Exam in order to make it to your dream B-School.

Why is LR&DI is important for CAT Exam?

Data interpretation aims to check your ability to extract the information from statistical representations such as graphs, tables, and charts. This data extracted from these representations needs to be manipulated through mathematical formulae to be used. Logical reasoning aims to check logical and general mental abilities of the candidates.

    Pattern:

No. of questions expected in 2017: There would be 32 questions for the section.

There would be 20 questions for the data interpretation and 12 questions for logical reasoning. One could expect 8 questions on tables, 4 on caselets, 4 on line graph, and another 4 on stacked bar graph. For logical reasoning, 4 question on circular seating puzzles, 4 on selection puzzles, and 4 on any other topic could be expected. However, the above is just an expectation, to give a rough idea about the exam.

    Syllabus:

Mathematical and number Series, clocks, calendars, Cubes, Venn diagrams, blood relations, connectives, syllogism, matching, seating arrangement, puzzles etc. could form part of logical reasoning. As far as data interpretation is considered, you might get question based on pictorial representation such as pie chart, bar graph, column graphs, tables, Venn diagrams or anything related.

Books and other study material: One of the good books you could refer for studies are:

    Pre-requisites:

One thing you need handy before exactly getting with data interpretation section is calculation. Make sure you know tables well, in order to save time during the exam. Learn quick calculation techniques. Vedic maths can provide you a variety of shortcuts for the same. Try calculating in mind, without using pen/pencil and paper. Initially, this might take a little time. But, as you practice, you would find that in fractions of seconds you can handle data effectively. Calculation speed and accuracy is must.

For logical reasoning, you would need calculation tips, but not much. Also, reading the question well is important. Do not assume anything. What is said should be followed, and what is not, should not be assumed. Words like "if", "only", "all", "some", "none", "only", "unless", "if and only if", etc. play an important role. Do not ignore them.

    Strategy:

Now is the most important thing, how to go about preparation? Books and brains and passion might not work, if not accompanied by the right strategy. You need to work smart and really smart to score good in CAT.

Here are a few tips and tricks which would help you score well in exam.

You need to know and understand the pattern for the examination well. Practice each type of question expected. Go for all type of probable questions that could be asked in the exam. It can be done through going through the previous year pares, mock tests and various books. Few books have been suggested above.

Practice makes the man perfect. You need to practice both the topics on a routine basis. Take previous year test papers. This will let you analyse the trend over the years. Also, practice mock tests. It will give you a perfect rehearsal before the exam. Take each type of question daily.

We have discussed this above as well. One needs to have accuracy and speed at calculation. This comes with practice again. Vedic mathematics techniques would help in speeding calculation. There are various shortcut techniques which would help in calculation.

Routine is important. The above mentioned tips need to be followed on a daily basis. Practicing many questions in a day and then not working on the section for rest two or three days can mess up things. Study limited (yes not very limited) but on routine basis.

Sometimes, a candidate may look at the options and try to approximate the answer. However, an approximation can be dangerous, if the options vary from each other in a range of ±2.  SO it's better to calculate answers exactly.

I hope all this helps you score good in CAT. Practice well, be confident, avoid assumptions and approximations, read question properly, and crack the CAT.

    All the best !!
