A world class Horticulture University is all set to come up at Karnal, Haryana with its three regional centres at Raiyya village in Jhajjar district, Jind and Dera village near Kala Amb in Naraingarh, as the Haryana government has given its nod for the same.
The Chaudhary Charan Singh Haryana Agriculture University, Hisar has proposed setting up of Horticulture University over a sprawling campus comprises of 700 acres of land during its first year. The estimated cost to set up the university has been calculated to be Rs. 206 crore.
In its 2015 Union budget the government has announced that it would set up two horticulture universities around the country. One of them would come up in Haryana and the other one is planned to come up in Telangana. Each of the university has been granted a sum of Rs. 50 crore initially in the budget.
In case of the Horticulture University that is scheduled to come up in Karnal, the state horticulture department would act as nodal department. For temporarily making the university functional, the Horticulture Training Institute at Uchani in Karnal district and regional station of HAU would be used.
In order to meet the manpower requirement and technical requirements of the university a system of education is soon going to be drawn up by the Haryana government. In order to impart skills and practical knowledge to the unemployed youth and willing students, there would be diploma and certificate courses in offer from the university. There is a provision of field experiments for the MSc and PhD students as well, who would get a chance to work in the farm land other than the plots allotted by the university alone, to make their research and studies more practical oriented.
