The National Institute of Design (NID), Ahmedabad, has recently been awarded the status of "Institute of National Importance" after receiving green signal from Parliament. It will now receive recognition and funding from the government as well as will be authorized to offer degrees and add PhDs to its course list. The NID was established in 1965.
Act of Parliament made NID positioned as one of the premier design institutes of India and it is now the 41st institute to have received such a status.
As reported by IANS this is the first bill under the government of Narendra Modi to have received clearance from both Lok Sabha and Rajya sabha within a three days.
The bill under the National Institute of Design Act, 2013 declares National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad, to be an institution of national importance to carry out quality and excellence in education, research and training in all design related disciplines.
Various other Premier educational organisations such as Indian Institutes of Technology, National Institutes of Technology, All India Institutes of Medical Sciences, and Indian Institutes of Science, Education and Research, have also been awarded this status.
