Schools in Scarcity: DISE Report

As per the data received from "5% sample checking of Delhi DISE (District Information System for Education) over the year 2012-2013, only around 54% of school principals in Delhi have postgraduate degrees and just 22% of that are having work experience more than a decade.

As per the data received from "5% sample checking of Delhi DISE (District Information System for Education) over the year 2012-2013, only around 54% of school principals in Delhi have postgraduate degrees and just 22% of that are having work experience more than a decade.

Authorized by government, the DISE study covered 258 of Delhi's schools (municipal, government, private-aided and unaided), and found out that over 1,100 teaching posts are still vacant in just the schools covered in the survey. 35.3% of all the schools surveyed were the private-unaided schools.

The good news of increasing enrolments in schools is getting overshadowed by the saddest fact that 59.3% of schools in Delhi have no room to enlarge its infrastructure accordingly.

The only parameter that all the schools seem to have fulfilled is the availability of toilets as every school has at least one loo place. Apart from this, every other parameter has some loopholes. There are schools in the central and southwest A districts of Delhi that function with no electricity connections; and there are many schools in the northeast and south that operate without pucca building.

"While 98.4% of schools had pucca boundary walls, 0.8% had pucca but in broken condition and 0.8% had no boundary wall at all," says the report.
Other facilities such as libraries and health checks are missing in many institutions. Report says, 20% schools in north Delhi and 16.7% in New Delhi have no libraries at all.

Keeping abreast of current-affairs is of low priority for many of schools as 44.2% of the total schools surveyed do not subscribe to any newspaper or magazines. While 26.5% schools have no playgrounds, 50.8% never bothered to have ramps for the disabled. The worst fact is that 11.4% of elementary section (classes I to VIII) classrooms have no furniture, and Continuous Comprehensive Evaluation (CCE) is yet to be implemented in 28.6% schools of elementary level.
